Timothy J. Monk, Jr.
I was born in Houston, Texas in 1971. I attended Cy Fair High School and went on to the University of Denver.
I swam competitively in college for 3 years. After college, I ended up eating and drinking way too much. I completely forgot about swimming or any form of exercise and blew up to over 200 pounds. In 2000, I had a boss named Doug King that took me running. Doug was in his late fifties at the time and completely destroyed me. He lectured me hard about being out of shape and at that moment, I made a choice to do something different with myself.
In 2002 I ran my first marathon and during the training lost over 40 pounds. My entire network of friends changed as I started to spend more time running. A good friend of mine, Don Pontes opened up a running store in Rocklin, CA called Running & Racing. Every Wednesday night we would get together and run. The store was more than just a place to sell shoes, it became a place for us to hang out. Through the store, I met some great friends, Matt Schloegel, Michael Woodward, Richard Kane, Vince Hoffart and many more. These friends talked me into buying a bike and becoming a triathlete.
In 2006 I had an opportunity through work to move back home to Houston, TX. This brought us closer to my family and proved to be an awesome change in our lives.
Although the move took me away from my California training partners, I found a new group of people all in love with the sport of triathlon. You will find us out there almost every Sunday on the bikes or hitting the trails early AM during the week.
Countless runs, races, swims and three Ironman's later, I find myself now training for the Ironman World Championship.
I am blessed to be married to Shani Monk and we have two beautiful children, Hannah and Parker. I am fortunate to be surrounded by friends and family that have supported me through out the years. Including my mom and dad that took me to countless swim practices.
